History of the Association of Future
Philosophers
The Association of Future Philosophers became a recognized student organization at Cal State Los Angeles in 1998. Its first president, Weed, founded the Journal of the Association of Future Philosophers, which published in 1998 the prescient article, “How to Reduce the Danger of Terrorism” and republished some interesting articles.
Weed led the Future Philosophers in organizing numerous philosophical talks, replacing the Philosophy Club, first recognized as a student organization at CSLA on August 5, 1968, as the most active student philosophy group at CSLA
Kigan Chang, who had been previously a vice president, was its second president.
Humberto Garciasalas, who had been previously a vice president, became its third president. Humberto Garciasalas reactivated the group. Moving away from holding philosophical talks, Humberto Garciasalas emphasized development of its web presence.
During the presidency of Humberto Garciasalas, the Journal of the Association of Future Philosophers published its first full-length philosophy paper, the important dialogue, “The Ends Do Not Justify the Means -- The Ethical Answer to the Problems of Anarchy and Government -- A Manual of Effective Political Participation” -- this paper takes into account government’s rap sheet which extends over thousands of years of serious crimes against society. Taking government’s criminality seriously leads to important ethical results and key insight and progress in political philosophy.
During the presidency of Humberto Garciasalas, the Journal also expanded its scope, publishing a paper on Schelling’s philosophy of art.
During his presidency, Humberto Garciasalas founded the AFP Education Journal; and Humberto Garciasalas became the editor-in-chief of this new journal.
During the
presidency of Humberto Garciasalas,
Weed founded AFP's New Humanist Thinking
Magazine, focused on the discussion of humanism, and the ethical
application of this philosophy to practical life. Avoiding affiliation with any
humanist organization, this magazine seeks open discussion with intellectual
honesty.
